The New Mother To Be?
Malutka, my female budgie of around 4 to 6 months old, has recently been inspecting the nest box. In the wild, a budgerigar female can start reproducing at around 3 months old. Though this is the same age a captive budgie can start reproducing, it would be much safer for any female budgie if the budgie owner let them breed at 12 to 18 months old.
Malutka is the youngest budgie in her flock of four others; Calypso, Skylar, Colada, and Flippy. Here are her coloration and striping pattern mutations:
COLORATION MUTATIONS
Base Color: Yellow-based
Dark Factor: No dark factor (light green variety)
STRIPING PATTERN MUTATIONS
Opaline

Malutka is behaving quite like a mother budgie should right before she lays the first egg. I have noticed that Malutka has been entering the nest box in the early morning hours. She remains inside of the nest box for most of the day, and defends the area by pecking at intruders or preforming loud screaming noises to anyone that gets too close.

Is She Carrying An Egg???
I am looking after my friends budgie. Her name is Flippy, and she might be carrying an egg. The father? Either Sky or Calypso, but i'm not too sure which male it is..
My suspicions started yesterday when Flippy made a few trips to the nest box. Upon looking inside the box, I noticed that the nesting material was moved around. Most of it was piled by the entrance. In a corner, there was no nesting material. Flippy had cleared an area for the eggs.
I thought that her mate was Sky, due to the fact that Flippy went to him after leaving the nest box. He then fed her. Just now, after leaving the box, Calypso started flirting with Flippy, then he fed her. Is budgie bonding supposed to be this confusing???
I also noticed that Flippy has been constantly preening her feathers and eating more. Right now she is eating, while everyone else plays around.

Their Relationship So Far: Update on Calypso and Malutka
Getting one of my male budgies to bond with one of the females has been quite difficult. Both Calypso and Skylar have had female budgies in the cage for about 4 months now, and I only recently noticed the slow bonding of Calypso and Malutka about 4 weeks ago.
Before a female was added to the cage, Calypso and Sky had a very strong bond with one another. Months after adding Malutka, both males were still ignoring her, which was a little concerning. I thought that maybe Calypso and Sky though of each other as a bonded, mating pair. They did attempt to mate with one another a few times.
My plan was to breed Calypso with Malutka, and Skylar with Colada. I am glad that Calypso has started showing an interest in Malutka. They have been grooming each other, sitting on the same perch side by side, and when separated, Calypso has been running back to Malutka more often than going to Sky.
The reason for wanting to breed Calypso and Malutka is because of the huge color difference; white-based blue variety and yellow-based green variety. Both birds have no dark factor, so I expect their chicks to either be sky blue or light green. A chick can either be white-based or yellow-based, opaline or have normal markings, or maybe a rare mutation will be created. I'm very curious as to what the chicks are going to look like. Time will tell if Calypso and Malutka become a breeding pair.

Budgie Island Florida - Meet The Budgies Before The Journey Begins!
Follow me as I track 2 of my budgies, Calypso and Malutka, as they bond, successfully mate, then start their first family as a breeding pair. Day 1 of their journey will start when I purchase a bigger cage; hopefully soon. Until then, I will tell you a bit about myself and my budgies.
About Me: Chelsie
My name is Chelsie and I am 17. I live in Florida with my dad, step mom, and my grandparents. We moved to Florida (from Germany) after I was discharged from Meridell Achievement Center on May 23, 2010. I was admitted on December 23, 2009 due to major depression, suicide attempts and thoughts, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, self mutilation, and family conflict. Shortly after my discharge, I adopted my first 2 budgies, Calypso and Sky, on July 22, 2010. Next, I adopted Malutka on August 21, 2010, than Colada on October 9, 2010.
